My mom is a very active grandmother. When she isn't spending time on the floor playing with small grandchildren she is working in her yard. Back pain was limiting her ability to do the things she loved to do so she asked me for help. We sat down and discussed her condition. I evaluated her mobility and determined what deficiencies lead to her problem. I made sure that she had a complete understanding of all of the factors that were contributing to her pain. Together we came up with a program of stretching and strengthening that was easy for her to do at home. She was the ideal patient and in a short time she managed to get back to doing what she loved, but more importantly, she had an understanding of what caused her problem and what she could do to keep her back pain from returning.
I came to the realization that if this is how I treat my family then this is how I should treat all of my patients. So I developed a practice model that allows me to teach my patients that if they understand what is causing their limitation then they will be empowered to take control of their condition and manage their progression to full function independently.
